USW GAMES ENTERPRISE MASTER CHEY WEBB ON THE CASE!

THE BIG FIX UP: TIME TO GET TO WORK!

BY USW GAMES ENTERPRISE MASTERS STUDENT CHEY WEBB

It’s my first week on the internship! I was excited to get started even with my hectic schedule. Y’see, I’m a masters student and my course isn’t quite finished yet, so I’m balancing finishing my own videogame with the internship and graduating soon. It’s a lot but I’m doing my best and enjoying the challenge!

I’m so glad I’ve gotten the opportunity to be a tiny part of this project. It’s going to offer a great insight into what a real working studio looks like.

I guess starting this internship I had some ideas about what it would be like since it’s basically game Q&A - which I’ve been doing for ages at uni in one form or another. This would be my first look at working inside the actual industry though, and it’s bound to be full of surprises. I’m looking forward to seeing how a real team operates, especially this team - a collaboration of many smaller teams all working together on one big project!

The first week was chock full of meetings. The first one we attended was the sprint review, which involved everyone showing their progress. It was a good opportunity to meet everyone and get to know names (I’m terrible at names) and take plenty of notes! It’s quite a lot to take in all at once. That said, the whole process was strangely familiar. Doing game design, we’re used to this kind of show and tell. I’m used to arranging weekly meetings between slightly different specialities. It’s reassuring to know that I’m already equipped to deal with these things! (Thanks tutors)

Of course, sitting in on these meetings, we’re listening to folks who’ve been working on the project for ages, so it was a little confusing because we’re missing context for a bunch of stuff at the minute. But! That means there’s lots for us to learn in the long run!

So, overwhelming and a little confusing: that’s how I’d describe this week. Luckily, the Design team has been doing a great job of looking after us! They’ve been taking us through all the software we need and helping us get settled in.

The most exciting thing has been actually getting my hands on the app! I had a vague idea of what it was but getting to play it has shown me all sorts of new stuff. Big Fix Up is an interesting thing to work on. I’ve never done anything quite like it. I’m sure I can’t say much, but I am thoroughly charmed by the experience! I’m sure everyone else will be too!

For now, I’m just happy to be on the case!
